T-Bone’s Authentic Philly Style Cheesesteaks and Hoagies

1017 20th St. S., Birmingham, AL 35205

https://www.tbonescheesesteaks.com/

For a faster-food option, try a cheesesteak from T-Bone’s. You can call ahead at (205) 582-9993, or order online and pick it up. Or grab a table and eat there.

The restaurant was opened by Anthony “T-Bone” Crawford and serves his cheesesteaks on genuine Amoroso rolls from Philadelphia — and does not use Cheez Whiz. These are the most authentic you’ll find in Alabama!

They also offer a number of variations that you can try, including the Pizza Steak, Mexicali Steak, and the Tony Montana. Or choose a chicken sandwich or salad for a lighter option.

Saw’s BBQ

1008 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209

215 41st St. S., Birmingham, AL 35222

1115 Dunston Ave., Birmingham, AL 35213

Saw’s BBQ was named one of the New York Times’ 52 Places to Go in 2017 and Men’s Journal also called them the Best Barbecue in America! So if you’re in the mood for barbecue, look no further than Saw’s BBQ. We recommend trying everything, but if you have to pick, their smoked chicken and pulled pork are typically the crowd favorites. Be sure to top it all with their signature white sauce. You’ll be licking your fingers and going back for more!

bartaco

1017 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209

https://bartaco.com/

Tacos are always a good call. Whether you’re in a hurry, looking for a quick lunch, or a chill dinner, bartaco should be on your list. Their cool vibe, including comfy couches and a fireplace, makes you feel like you’re on the beach and creates a calming mood. Try the pork belly or baja fish tacos, which are our favorites. They also have rice bowls, salads, and a variety of other Mexican-inspired tasty dishes.

Hamburger Heaven

5303 Highway 280 S., Birmingham, AL 35242

http://hamburgerheavenrestaurant.com/

Sometimes you’re just craving a good ole American burger and fries. For that, Hamburger Heaven was voted Birmingham’s best and also ranked by USA Today. Add sweet potato fries, and save some room for an ice cream sundae for dessert. Prices are reasonable, and they have something for everyone, including a healthy choice menu and kid’s specials. Hamburger Heaven has been in business for over 34 years and has a number of locations in Alabama.

Mr P’s Butcher Shop & Deli

813 Shades Crest Road, Birmingham, AL 35226

http://www.mrpdeli.com/

Mr P’s is a local favorite for sandwiches and weekly deli groceries. One of the best butcher shops around. They’re known for their homemade Italian sausage or Cajun roast beef options. They even publish many of their recipes on their website if you really like what you’ve tried. Also, don’t miss their breakfast sandwiches in the morning, served from 8:30–10:30 a.m. Mr P’s is run by the Pilleteri family, and also sells seasonings and marinades.

Taco Loco

702 Valley Ave., Birmingham, AL 35209

https://www.yelp.com/biz/el-taco-loco-birmingham

Another taco option in Birmingham, Taco Loco is a great spot for authentic Mexican food. It’s a casual dive restaurant with great prices. We recommend starting with some chips and queso, then chowing down on a burrito loco or a steak plate. Or mix it up and try other taco variations. If you’re looking for tasty, cheap eats, this is the place to go.

Bottega Cafe and Dining Room

http://www.bottegarestaurant.com/

2240 Highland Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35205

The Bottega Cafe and Dining Room are the local Italian cuisine favorite. It’s located in a historic building, which creates a great ambience. The cafe side is a relaxing atmosphere where you can grab a nice espresso or a glass of wine.

For a more formal meal, make a reservation in their dining room. Their bread and olive oil always make us hungry to start the meal. For entrees, all of the authentic Italian dishes are great, and we love their pizzas, too.
